Acting For Others

In the 1960s, Laurence Olivier, Noël Coward and Richard Attenborough, had the idea of creating a single appeal organisation for all theatrical charities and The Combined Theatrical Charities Appeals Council, now known as Acting for Others, was formed.

From mid-October onwards, every year, at times to suit their productions, bucket collections – now with electronic donation aids – are held in theatres across the country. Audiences are asked to show their generosity to support those in the profession experiencing hardship.

Through the network of 14 member charities we provide financial and emotional support to all theatre workers in times of need, whether they are backstage, on stage, front of house, or creatives, however they have contributed to the workings of the theatre. In addition to individual grant making, the network has been able to provide counselling, benefit advice, support nursing home fees, help with retraining and help actors’ children and more recently, especially through the covid pandemic, support those in crisis.

The funds raised help us come to the aid of all theatre professionals. Without the help and enthusiasm of the theatrical community and generous donations from audiences and others, Acting for Others could not continue to enable the remarkable work we do through the 14 member charities.
